There is a reason why metal braces have been around so long – they work. Metal braces are the most common type of braces for orthodontic patients. Today’s metal braces are much smaller, flatter, and more comfortable than in the past. Patients of all ages choose metal braces to help them achieve straight and beautiful smiles because they are efficient and reliable. Braces place a constant pressure on the teeth, and this force will guide the teeth to their proper positions. At each appointment, your arch wires may be replaced to ensure the proper amount of force is being placed on the teeth. Some patients may also require the use of rubber bands to aid in treatment. Traditional braces have progressed since the early days and are now lighter in weight and structure than they used to be. They are made from a high-grade stainless steel and have metal brackets that are attached to each tooth using a type of cement. The brackets are linked to each other with a thin arch wire, which puts pressure on the teeth to cause them to move slowly into the correct position. Traditional braces consist of standard metal brackets that are adhered to your teeth with an adhesive and connected by wire. They require periodic tightening so pressure can gradually straighten your teeth and align your jaw as needed.
